13.93 The Conservation Bodies, and in some instances Local Authorities, have power to conclude Management Agreements with farmers and landowners in a variety of situations, providing for payments for environmental land management.

Agreements fall into two broad categories: (i) those that are concluded under nature conservation legislation (for example in SIs or SACs); and (ii) agreements offered and concluded under agri-environment schemes funded under Pillar 2 (rural development) of the Common Agricultural Policy.

The principal agri-environment schemes under which environmental land management agreements are currently available or extant in England are Countryside Stewardship (from 2015) and the Environmental Stewardship scheme (which applied from 2005–15). The GlasTir scheme applies currently in Wales. The availability, and terms, of agreements under both these schemes and the statutory provisions for nature conservation, are considered together below. In many situations a farmer or landowner may have agreements under both at any one time.
