2 Scope of Class B rights
12.102 The Class B permission applies to agricultural units of not less than 0.4 hectares (one acre) and up to 5 hectares in extent. The Class B permission does not apply to units of 5 hectares or more, which are now governed by the separate permissions in Class A (above).
Before 2 January 1992 one permission was granted for all development on parcels of land over 0.4 hectares in extent; the changes introduced in 1992 mean that two separate permissions (with appropriate conditions and restrictions) are available, depending on the size of the unit concerned. Class B gives a more restricted permission for development on small farms. Class A (above) gives permission on larger units for all building works, excavation or engineering operations (subject to conditions). The Class B permission applies only to specific kinds of development. The parcel of land on which development is to be carried out must, moreover, be not less than 0.4 hectares in area (Class B.1(a)).
