Interpreting Conflict

Turn Speaker Message
82 M Are we done [discussing that topic]?
83 W I guess so.
84 M Why? We didn’t talk about it.
85 W Yes we do, we...
I was just saying that we have trouble communicating. That sometimes, like it doesn’t matter how you say it, I’m gonna take it wrong because, no matter how I say it you’re gonna take it wrong and...
86 M How can we work on that?
87 W Well “counselor,” [sarcastically] I think that we can work on it.

What do you mean, “How are we gonna work on it?” [hostile question]

88 M We just gonna live that way and be frustrated, or are we gonna work on it?

This chapter addresses the question posed by the man in turn 88: Are you going to be frustrated by how you and your conflict partners interpret communication during conflict or are you going to work on it? As this chapter shows, the interpretation of conflict defies quick and simple conclusions. Without knowing how complex people are in their conflict interpretations, we cannot conclude anything of value to the reader. So we want to be careful in representing the findings and principles on how people interpret conflict. We refine our review of necessity to provide the foundation for strategic conflict suggestions. First, we want to set the context with regard to people’s capability to be objective witnesses of their conflict episodes.
