Lattice Theory
Jonathan Farley applies lattice theory, a branch of abstract mathematics, to intelligence data to uncover the underlying organization of terrorist cells. Terrorists usually know as few members of their organization as possible to minimize the damage should one be identified or captured.
When one is identified, computer programs search for connections such as phone calls, places of worship, friends, and political affiliations to identify possible associates. A second program takes skills and relationships into account to build a possible table of organization. Intelligence and law enforcement specialists can work back and forth with programmers to determine what additional information is needed to determine the organizational structure and who the key personnel are.
