Sources of Energy
The energy resources can be classified as follows:
Coal accounts for a little more than 50% of India’s energy consumption.
Majority of the energy generated by coal is used by power sector which is followed by heavy industry. Petroleum meets 34.4% of the energy demand while natural gas accounts for 6.5% followed by hydroelectricity which is 6.3%. Nuclear energy has a very small share of 1.7% whereas solar, geothermal and wind energy - all combined together yield only 0.2% of the total amount. Fig 1.1 Below depicts the contribution of various energy resources.
