1.0 Introduction
This chapter discusses religious belief and practices of the two denotified communities of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states, namely the Waddar and the Yerukula. They were branded as criminal tribes during the colonial period; and presently they belong to Nomadic, Semi-Nomadic, and Denotified category, though some of them are listed as Backward Class and Scheduled Caste.
These people consider themselves tribe, but use the term caste in place of clan or lineage to present themselves, perhaps due to long exposition to caste people. Their life-ways are diverse and have changed to a certain extent in response to forces of modernity; but they largely follow traditional religious practices. However, a few of them have converted to Christianity and still very few to Islam. This chapter primarily focuses on the belief system of traditionalists as embodied in their life-ways with passing reference to converted sections.1.1
