RITUALS

The rituals of the Nordic Bronze Age are well attested. In particular, the rock carvings - in some cases apparently depicting complex rituals - testify to the important role played by religion.

Here processions and dances are shown. We see performers with horned helmets playing on lurs, and carrying of cult axes and solar symbols, all objects well known as a physical reality from our museum collections. Also in the ritual world, the ship had an overwhelming importance, serving as a transportable platform or “temple” for rituals. A rock carving at Sotetorp, Bohuslän, Sweden, illustrates such a situation. On board a ship with horse-headed stems male performers with horned helmets are carrying cult axes and solar symbols, while female acrobatic dancers emphasize the vividness of the rituals.
