THE SYSTEM OF MEASURED ARRANGEMENT

All forms of science tend to employ systems of measurement. Such systems allow our qualitative experience of reality to be expressed in terms of quantities or numbers.

In this regard, the ancient science of immortality was no different.

It was rooted in a “system of measured arrangement,” which served to specify the scales of consciousness that constitute collectively the path of immortality. According to the Hermetic texts, as an enlightened soul ascends through the heavens, it measures them. These measurements, conducted in consciousness, provide the basis for a scientific description of the spectrum expressed in the language of mathematics, the universal language of science.

The Hermetic texts go on to suggest that the Egyptians possessed an ancient system of measured arrangement by which they mapped out the various layers of consciousness that constitute collectively the cosmic spectrum. This doctrine is presented in the form of a discourse between the Egyptian goddess Isis and her son Horus: “The space between earth and heaven is parted out into divisions, my son Horus, according to a system of measured arrangement. These divisions are variously named by our ancestors, some of whom call them zones, others firmaments, and others layers. They are the haunts of the souls that have been released from their bodies, and likewise of the souls that have not yet been embodied.”12

The antiquity of this doctrine is emphasized by putting it into the mouth of the goddess Isis, the wife and sister of Osiris and one of the oldest deities in the Egyptian pantheon. It is further emphasized by having Isis state that the system was known even to her ancestors. It has to do with the layers of consciousness that serve as the haunts for disembodied soul. In other words, this philosophy pertains to the arrangement of virtual vacuum states inherent within the unified field, each of which may be viewed as having its own elementary constituents.

Although the actual system of arrangement is not described in detail, the notion that it represents a measured system implies that it can be described in terms of numbers or quantities.
