The Trend of Change and the Kuki Traditional Religion
Although rituals in the Kuki society are lost in their real sense, the contemporary Kuki society makes use of many rituals knowingly and unknowingly to mark the beginning or as fulfilment of significant events in their life; the completion of important tasks or performances; the transition of one state or time period to another.
Traditional rituals reflect the culture of the society31. The Kuki of the past are understood to have been uncontaminated and un-encroached. The spirit of oneness, togetherness, so called instinct, leads the individuals to form a society. The Kuki society of today has undergone a change in almost all spheres. Unfortunately, the traditional religion and custom is losing its significance at an appalling rate that now the educated youth do not understand or conform the ways of the society, but rather attempt to adapt themselves to the track of modernisation. However, the rejection of their past is not based on a self-conscious realisation of its short coming, but is a result of secularisation as in the case of western societies (Paokai 1981:62-63)32. Agents like thempu in Kuki society for instance, who have served as an instrument for helping in retaining and absorbing their own tradition and cultural past, with the advent of Christianity have become irrelevant. But the essence of his role is found in the Christian priest as has been discussed.14.4
