Industrialization of Ukraine
Stalin’s vicious repression led to a cessation of opposition in Ukraine. His military and policing interventions were shockingly effective in bringing about compliance. Once the communists had pacified Ukraine in this way, mining and industry sectors began to churn out profits—for the USSR.
Stalin quickly rebuilt the industrial network of Ukraine that had been destroyed by war. Starting with coal and iron mining, Ukrainian industry branched out into electricity generation. Steel works and machinery fabrication grew, as well as chemical production and food processing. These industries provided some employment and local infrastructure development, but in a Soviet Union, everything gets taken away to be shared out. The politburo was never particularly generous in redistributing resources it had taken from it back to Ukraine. Ukraine’s economy did develop, but very slowly.
In 1941, it came to an abrupt halt.
