Key Takeaway

Russia had never wanted Ukraine to be independent from it. The 1991 dissolution of the USSR was widely regarded by the Russians as a great disaster.
New technologies result in new ways of waging war.
None of the world’s faiths simply go away in the face of opposition.
Religion is a powerful social institution which promotes self-identity.
Many nefarious interest groups in Ukraine do not actively want peace.

It is an innovation of our times for a nation to have aspirations to independence without dominating any other territory. The consensus of the world’s nations is that countries should be self-determining and interdependent (without domination/subordination). Many nations, like Ukraine, are calling for fair treatment, a dynamic which is open to manipulation by external interests, who might want to encourage separation of countries into smaller states which would then “align” themselves favorably with neighboring territories. Russia, for one.

In the next chapter, we shall examine how nationalistic bias intersects with our human search for peace, as we discuss the search for an unbiased version of history.
