Lenin—Founder or Oppressor of the Ukrainian State?

On the other side of the balance sheet is Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. A Ukrainian history student would tell you to take all the great things said about Lenin in Russian History textbooks—and believe the opposite.

Ukrainians are infuriated by the suggestion that just because Russia under Lenin fought others for control of their territories, he should be considered as the “founder” of the Ukrainian State. No bulky statues will persuade a Ukrainian that Lenin was not a bandit like all the rest.

Ordinary Russians, however, see things in a different light. “Ukraine” had been a patchwork of feuding provinces, unable to maintain stable statehood. Russian forces under Lenin federalized the Ukrainian regions which then became one of the three first signatories of the USSR. Lenin had exercised god-like powers in bringing peaceful order out of violent chaos, and Ukraine owed her a debt of gratitude.

That difference in opinion is going to take more than a little talking through.
