The Battle for Kherson
In 988 CE, Vladimir the Great sacked Cherson. In 2022, Vladimir the Recent sacked it again, under its new name of Kherson.
On March 2nd, Russian forces, massed in Crimea and then moving north, quickly overran Kherson.
It was an encouragement to the Russian cause, and the Pravda celebrations made up for the missing celebrations over Kyiv. Kherson and Kyiv were two key points that were meant to fall in a swift pincer movement. Unfortunately for the Russian cause, the pincers broke, leaving them with the lesser prize of Kherson. The Ukrainians have sniped back, but their military doctrine does not envisage pitched battles with entrenched enemies. From the Ukrainian point of view, it is indeed a significant loss, and it demonstrates the imbalance of power between the two militaries. Ukrainian hope lies in making a long-term occupation untenable. Even Pravda will find it hard to spin years of resistance into a happy welcome of liberators.
