Conclusion

Echocardiography has an important role for HIV patients, allowing the diagnosis of cardiac abnormalities, allowing follow-up and in evaluating the prognosis. In the HAART era, the prevalence and incidence of cardiac abnormalities should be reassessed.

The effect of HAART therapy on the incidence of HIV-related cardiovascular disease and manifestations should be prospectively determined. Prospective studies are needed to fully analyse the impact of HAART therapy on the development of cardiac abnormalities and to evaluate the potential complications due to their administration. Echocardiography with the development of new technologies such as myocardial Doppler imaging, strain-rate imaging, threedimensional and contrast echocardiography, should be useful in this respect.
