Genital Warts
GENERAL PRINCIPLES
Genital warts are caused by HPV. Different serotypes have been associated with the lesions, notably types 6 and 11. Other common HPV types (16, 18, 31, and 33) are associated with malignant transformation in different anatomic sites. Genital warts in HIV-infected persons are typically more resistant to treatment and have a higher chance of recurrence.19
DIAGNOSIS
Diagnosis is made on the basis of physical examination and history. In some situations, biopsy of the lesions may be necessary.
TREATMENT
Local therapy is aimed at the removal of the warts. HPV vaccination is recommended in women and men ages 9-45 (see previous section on immunizations).
