Reaction of the shar'i establishment: scholars and religious tendencies
The Islamic authorities and institutions reacted with trepidation to the government’s plans to issue a new personal status law, raising objections to a number of points that they considered contrary to the Islamic shari'a. There were, however, significant differences within and between the various bodies.
