The position on polygyny
The vast majority of male respondents in the sample stated that the husband had the right to marry another wife in a polygynous union if the wife was unable to have children, or if she had a long-term illness, on the pretext that ‘the husband cannot take not being sexually satisfied for a long time, so he has to take another wife’.

It is worth noting here that the Teligiousjustihcation for polygyny came towards the end of the list, after reasons that those who supported them saw as rational and practical. As for the relationship between the hrst and subsequent wives, a large proportion of the female respondents said that in most cases it was hostile.
