27.5 ACCIDENTS IN CHILDHOOD
Accidents account for ~10-15% of total pediatric admissions in Indian hospitals. Common childhood accidents include: (a) physical trauma or injuries, (b) burns, (c) drowning, (d) poisonings, and (e) foreign body inhalation or ingestion. In addition, envenomations, e.g. snake bite or scorpion sting, etc. and heat or cold injuries are common in certain geographical locations. This chapter deals with some common accidents in childhood, excluding poisonings, which have been discussed in next chapter.
