CONCLUSION

This chapter seeks to be a reference primarily to the physician, but also all potential rehabilitation team members. It details the uses of psychological assessment and hopefully acts as a primer of sort on how to be a “good consumer” of such services.

Since the first edition of this book an important development in the CPT codes has occurred. In 2002, the addition of the health and behavior assessment and intervention codes established diagnostic interview and interventions for psychosocial adjustment and psychoeduca- tional purposes as a legitimate and billable activity. Prior to this, treatment or even a referral for evaluation would require assigning a psychiatric diagnosis for CPT coding, which was wholly inappropriate. With this change, there is now a complete framework for the supportive and intervention role of mental health staff to assist patients and families in the significant coping challenges in the medical setting. This recognition removes all barriers to the inclusion of valuable psychosocial interventions to enable our patients and their families to have the services vital to the optimum outcome of the rehabilitation process.
