Roman law did not require documentation to make a marriage valid, though often contracts were drawn up stating the terms of the dowry [see Part I.D].
In some provinces, marriage contracts were a custom long pre-dating Roman rule. Most surviving marriage contracts are from Egypt, but a few also survive from the eastern provinces of Judaea and Arabia and from the military outpost of Dura Europos on the Euphrates.78
