Cytokines
Cytokines are small proteins produced by all nucleated cells, particularly leukocytes. They provide an important way for cells to communicate, limit injury, and drive an appropriate immune response. These molecules have been subdivided based on molecular structure and biologic activities. Types of cytokines include interferons, interleukins, chemokines, mesenchymal growth factors, the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) family of proteins, and adipokines.
