9 Hazardous waste

14.98 The Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005²¹⁸ were applied to agricultural waste from 15 May 2007. Farming activities may generate limited quantities of hazardous waste.²¹⁹ If a holding generates more than 500kg of hazardous waste (excluding scrap vehicles) it must be notified to the Environment Agency. Substances coming within the decision of hazardous waste will include used oil, scrap vehicles, batteries, asbestos, unused or obsolete pesticides and vetinary wastes. Hazardous waste must be separated form non hazardous waste – if it is not, all waste containing any hazardous material will be considered to be hazardous waste and subject to the more stringent regulation on disposal set opt in the 2005 Regulations.
