Emerging Themes and Future Directions for Theorizing, Research, and Practice
Regardless of whether you use a multilevel approach to the study of conflict, there are a number of stimulating topics, issues, and consequences in the study of conflict communication across the four conflict contexts.
Some of these topics include the following: (a) focus on time/development of conflict (e.g., Caughlin et al., Chapter 6; Garner & Poole, Chapter 12; Teucher et al., Chapter 11); (b) conflict communication skills (e.g., Canary et al., Chapter 10; Guerrero, Chapter 4; Jones, Chapter 15); (c) dialogue (e.g., Barge & Andreas, Chapter 23; Broome, Chapter 28; Cheney et al., Chapter 18; Dorjee, Chapter 26; Littlejohn & Cole, Chapter 22); and (d) paradoxes and reflexivity (Cheney et al., Chapter 18; Dorjee, Chapter 26; Fisher-Yoshida, Chapter 30; Stohl et al., Chapter 27). We also see three inspiring themes that we think should be, and will be, the focus of future theorizing, researching, and practicing of conflict communication in the coming years: transformation, globalization, and social media.
