Personality Differences

Individual differences refer to properties of the individual that affect his/her strategy choice; these are discussed in Chapter 7. Although many individual differences exist, we focus on personality variables that research shows have clear relevance to conflict management.

As odd as it appears, empirical research has found that sex differences do not affect communication behavior in a robust or consistent manner (for reviews on sex differences, see Dindia & Canary, 2006). Accordingly, we focus on robust and consistent individual effects due to agreeableness, neuroticism, attachment, narcissism, and locus of control. Because individuals differ on these factors, your composite of personality features (or personality profile) differs from those of other people. At this point, individuals attempt to secure personal control.
