Conclusion
Although we haven't settled on an account of philosophical intuitions, hopefully we have a better sense for the different conceptions currently in use in contemporary philosophy, and for their various strengths and weaknesses.
While philosophers disagree about the precise nature of philosophical intuitions, there is widespread agreement about the role that they play in contemporary philosophical practice, and hopefully we have a better sense for what that role is supposed to be. We advance philosophical theories on the basis of their ability to explain our philosophical intuitions, and appeal to them as evidence that those theories are true and reasons for believing as such. In the coming chapters, we will see how experimental philosophy emerges from this way of thinking about philosophy, and examine how experimental philosophy might both complement this way of doing philosophy and help identify ways in which it should be reformed.
