Preface
Before anything else, it must be kept in mind that this is not a book of economics but one of philosophy. It is true that it deals with economic theories and presents them in a rigorous form, but for the same reason it is a book on metatheory.
It intends to present each economic theory as an intellectual realm, a systematic and integral unit, including a general explication of its application to empirical phenomena. We must recall, as Hegel used to say, that philosophy returns over the real (albeit in this case the ‘real’ are only economic theories) in order to reconstruct it as a an intellectual kingdom. It appears in the twilight painting its object in gray:Wenn die Philosophie ihr Grau in Grau malt, dann ist eine Gestalt des Lebens alt geworden, und mit Grau in laβt sie sich nicht veηungen, sonder nur erkennen: die Eule der Minerva beginnt erst mit der einbrechenden Dammer- ung ihren Flug (Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts: 28).
