the first stages of Ukrainian travel to the Middle East were dom­inated by pilgrims visiting the Holy Land and other such places of interest.

But by the eighteenth century adventurers of other sorts had followed those first pilgrims and the profle of Middle East travel changed. The next century saw scholars and political exiles as well as artists and writers of other kinds set out on such journeys, and the historical record becomes much richer.
