Who Should Get Tested

All pregnant women.

People at increased risk for HIV infection. Factors associated with in­creased risk are:

• age between 15 and 54 years

• homosexual or bisexual sex

• injection drug use

• commercial sex work (prostitution)

• multiple sex partners

• sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea, chlamydia, or syphilis

• sex with people who have any of the above factors, or who are known to have HIV infection

People with medical conditions commonly associated with HIV:

• thrush

• any AIDS-defining condition

• active tuberculosis, that is, not just a positive skin test, but active disease with a cough, fever, and weight loss

People who have been exposed to the blood or bloody body fluids of someone known to have HIV infection or suspected of having tubercu­losis.

The exposure should be to blood on mucous membranes in the mouth or eyes, on skin with cuts or acne or any other openings, or from injections with a needle.
