Who Should Get Tested
All pregnant women.
People at increased risk for HIV infection. Factors associated with increased risk are:
• age between 15 and 54 years
• homosexual or bisexual sex
• injection drug use
• commercial sex work (prostitution)
• multiple sex partners
• sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea, chlamydia, or syphilis
• sex with people who have any of the above factors, or who are known to have HIV infection
People with medical conditions commonly associated with HIV:
• thrush
• any AIDS-defining condition
• active tuberculosis, that is, not just a positive skin test, but active disease with a cough, fever, and weight loss
People who have been exposed to the blood or bloody body fluids of someone known to have HIV infection or suspected of having tuberculosis.
The exposure should be to blood on mucous membranes in the mouth or eyes, on skin with cuts or acne or any other openings, or from injections with a needle.
