Beta-sympathomimetics
Ritodrine and salbutamol were introduced as tocolytics into clinical practice in the 1970s, but are associated with potentially life- threatening side effects. These include pulmonary oedema, myocardial ischaemia, and hyperglycaemia. Since drugs with a better side effect profile are now available, the use of beta-sympathomimetics is now redundant in most high-resource settings.
