PERINATAL INFECTIONS
Infections are major cause of perinatal morbidity, responsible for gt;40% neonatal deaths in India. Newborns are highly susceptible for infections due to immature defense mechanisms (Table 12.43) as well as exposure to variable bacterial flora during delivery or postnatal stay in the hospital. Various diagnostic/therapeutic interventions in intensive care units are further source of nosocomial infections in sick babies. Interestingly, male newborn is more prone for infections, perhaps due to possible locus of gene for immunoglobulin synthesis on X chromosome (?).
