PIGMENTARY SKIN DISORDERS
Normal skin pigmentation depends on the melanin production by melanocytes, which are mainly present in epidermis and synthesize melanin from tyrosine- an amino acid. Melanocytes are derived from neuroectoderm and migrate to epidermis in embryonic life. Pigmentary disturbances may be congenital (Table 25.2) or acquired; and clinically present as generalized or localized (patchy) hypo/hyperpigmented lesions.
