PREDICTION OF OUTCOME (PRISM SCORE)
PRISM score (Pediatric Risk of Mortality) is a commonly used scoring system in PICUs to evaluate the efficacy of care and compare it with others.
Based on 17 physiological variables, PRISM score has demonstrated consistent relationship between the score at 12 and 24 hours and the mortality risk in a given PICU (Table 27.18). However, it is of limited predictive value in an individual case.
Many other scores, e.g. Pediatric Index of mortality (PIM1,2 and 3) are also available to predict outcome of patients admitted in PICU.
