Safety Responsibility of the Medical Director and Program Director

The ultimate responsibility for the adherence to safety policies lies with the medical director and the program director. These individuals should establish and enforce the physical requirements for the role.

They are also responsible for delineating the safety policies of the team and should have the authority to require certain safety standards on the part of contracted vehicle vendors. Team members who knowingly violate safety policies are endangering themselves, their colleagues, and the patients. The medical director and program director should not tolerate such behavior. The medical director, the program director, or others in the organization are likely to receive occasional complaints from referring hospitals when transports are delayed or referred based on weather restrictions, crew fatigue, or other safety-related factors, and they should address these issues directly.
