Social Disruption as Intended Consequence of a Culture of Impunity
It is not difficult to extrapolate from the respondent interview data cited above the disruptive effects of violence on family and community. However, the examination of three major areas of such disruption, representative of the disruptive consequences of the culture of impunity, may help the reader in clarification and categorization of these phenomena. The three areas of (a) the existence of the civil patrols and their use in dividing villages and communities and in bringing them under the counterinsurgency apparatus; (b) the dismembering of families through disappearance and execution; and (c) the social distancing of communities of resistance from communities of complacence are the main disruptive aspects of the counterinsurgency culture.
