Auricular Chondropathy
Inflammatory lesions of the auricular pinnae arise spontaneously in multiple strains of rats and mice, often, but not always, in association with metal ear tags. Lesions are characterized by chronic granulomatous inflammation with destruction of cartilage, nodular proliferation of new cartilage (Figs.
2.68 and 2.69), and foci of osseous metaplasia. When arising in association with ear tags, the contralateral ear is often involved. Lesions closely resemble those induced by immunization with type II

collagen, and are, therefore, believed to be immunologically mediated.
