The peripheral nervous system includes that part of the nervous system outside the brain and spinal cord. It is responsible for collecting most of the sensory information that is relayed to the central nervous system (CNS).
It is also responsible for carrying motor signals to the skeletal and smooth muscles. As discussed in Chapter 8, the peripheral nervous system includes a sensory and motor component (Fig. 8.2). The autonomic nervous system is a branch of this motor component.
