Guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) Morphology

The guinea pig. also called the cavy. originated from South America where it is still used for food. Adults measure from 20-55 cm. the males being larger than the females, and weigh 7 50-120( I g.

The body is short and stocky with short legs and no tail. There arc four toes on each forcfhighly fibrous diet of grasses found high up in the Andes. A healthy diet for a chinchilla should therefore include high levels of fibre and protein. Treats such as apples, figs and sultanas must be given in moderation. It is not uncommon for chinchillas to die from constipation or diarrhoea caused by an over indulgent owner.

I∙eιnale- the anogenital distance is shorter. A relatively large urinary papilla lies close to the anus and can be mistaken for a penis: however, there is no hairless band between it and the anus. 'Γhe opening to the urethra is on the tip of this papilla and the opening to the slit-like vulva is immediately caudal Io it.
