This chapter has explored various ways that conflict messages have been linked to serious relational outcomes. These outcomes can be summarized by considering three questions. Ask yourself the following:
(1) How can I use conflict strategically to hurt my partner?
(2) How can I use conflict strategically to hurt my partnership?
(3) How can I use conflict strategically to hurt my children?
The point is that people often do not realize that their conflict strategies can
have unintended and deleterious effects.
And outcomes related to abuse, divorce, and child maladjustment are not the only problems that negative conflict strategies can cause! (See Chapter 12 regarding the health outcomes of conflict.) Nevertheless, given the possibility for you to experience any one or all of these disasters, you should be ready to become a smarter, more strategic communicator.
