Conclusion

We had two foci in this chapter. First, we believe future theorizing, researching, and practice should continue to understand the multilevel effects of antecedent factors on conflict communication and also of conflict communication on outcomes.

We illustrated various possibilities for using multilevel approaches to explore parallels, discontinuities, top-down effects, bottom-up effects, and interactive effects. Second, we explored several emerging themes in this Handbook and extant literature that appear ripe for conflict research and practice: transformation, globalization, and social media. These themes appear to be timely, inspirational, and critical in understanding and explaining conflict communication across multiple levels and contexts. To conclude, in finalizing our editing task on this Handbook, we believe that the field of conflict communication across the four contexts of interpersonal, organizational, community, and intercultural/international settings is at a vibrant, blooming stage. We firmly believe that the synergistic wisdom and the knowledge in this Handbook can help theorists, researchers, instructors, students, and practitioners to make more mindful choices in their theorizing, teaching, researching, learning, and practicing of constructive conflict communication. On both personal and professional levels, we look forward to the full blossoming of the conflict theory-research-practice field. We hope that some of the themes we mentioned in this chapter will be of heuristic value to the next generation of conflict communication scholars, students, and practitioners.
