Limitations of Existing Research

As illustrated through our summary in the previous section, existing research on interracial and interethnic conflict has established a strong base of foundational knowledge. While earlier studies explored the conflict styles of different racial/ethnic groups, more recent scholarship has advanced this research by examining the saliency of other variables (e.g., gender and national identity).

In similar ways, researchers have explored various sources of conflict. Despite its strengths, existing research is limited in a number of different ways. Within this section, we highlight five of the most salient limitations: (1) traditional empirical approaches, (2) eurocentric/ethno- centric bias, (3) essentializing generalizations, (4) assumptions of/focus on difference, and (5) focus on microlevel practices.
