Notes

1. Few studies of conflict using East Asian samples (e.g., Japan, Korea, China, Thailand, and Vietnam) have considered religion as a variable.

2. All Bible verses are taken from the New International Version as opposed to the King James Version.

3. When scholars use the word Muslim, they are referring to someone who practices Islam (the religion).

4. As many Muslims consider English translations of the Qur’an fallible, no direct translations will be provided in this chapter. Instead, where appropriate, the Qur’an will be paraphrased from Ali (1993).

5. For examples of familial or communal obligation, connection, and love in the Qur’an, see the following verses: 4: 46, 19: 24, 31: 14, and 7: 190.

6. All direct quotations from the Gita are taken from Hawley (2001).
