The Stirrings of Ukrainian National Consciousness 1848

As long as the Ukrainians ate Ukrainian food (beetroot borscht, paska, and varenyky) and spoke Ukrainian, they would remain Ukrainian. In Western Ukraine, national consciousness began to revive as the strength of Austria began to weaken, especially after the civil unrest that swept the Austrian Empire around 1848. The Ukrainians started organizing small local militias, and pushing for secession. The first Ukrainian-language newspaper began to circulate. The tax on peasants was eventually abolished in 1848.
