SUMMARY AND PERSPECTIVES
Even after more than 20 years of intensive investigation, the fundamental question of how HIV kills CD4+ T lymphocytes has defied a clear answer. Although a number of HIV proteins are cytotoxic in a variety of cellular systems, an open question remains as to which, if any, play a significant role in killing infected T cells in vivo.
It is also unclear what contribution the various mechanisms posited to explain bystander killing play in vivo. Understanding not only the possible mechanisms of killing that exist but also, more importantly, identifying those that play a significant role in vivo are crucial for the development of new therapeutic strategies to prevent the death of CD4+ T cells in HIV-infected patients.REFERENCES
