How to express assisted reproductive technology success rates?

Management of infertility is unusual in medical practice in that it has a binary outcome—the patient is either pregnant or she is not. This should mean that the expression of IVF statistics is simple. However, competition between clinics is frequently intense. Many countries do not provide adequate reimbursement for IVF treatment, with preference for a commercial model of care. Clinics are then judged by potential patients and referring doctors on the basis of their rates of success, leading to distortion of the metrics used for comparison.
