Effective team working is crucial to maternity care as has been highlighted in a report on safety in maternity services (1). Anaesthesia is not risk free. Preparedness is an integral part of pro­viding safe care. Clear, simple, respectful communication is a key component of teamwork. The anaesthetist must be informed at an early stage of all high-risk patients to allow for timely consultation. A thorough understanding of the basics, including informed con­sent, a working knowledge of the drugs commonly administered, the availability of emergency airway and resuscitation equipment, as well as personnel trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation are all critically important resources and skills to have.
