A Introduction
There are two major hurdles to understanding the place of the hypothesis in science: one is that “hypothesis” has many meanings, and the second is that “science” has many meanings.
I've reviewed the hypothesis and settled on the conceptual framework advanced by Karl Popper, but I haven't said much about science itself. Is it one enterprise or many? And, if there is more than one “kind” of science, how are the different kinds related to the hypothesis? Popper largely skirted the matter, which has gained prominence recently as huge areas of science have opened up that don't depend on explicit hypothesis testing. This issue frequently is hidden in discussions of science and, because it is unacknowledged, it can cause problems in communication. Hypothesis testing coexists peacefully with other modes of conducting science, but you wouldn't always know it from the way people sometimes talk about them. Before getting into that part of the debate, we can begin with the matter of whether science is one unified activity or a group of them.4.
