Cleft Lip/Palate
Congenital cleft lip and cleft palate are common in A strain mice and may be accompanied by premature eyelid opening in that strain. A/WySn mice are particularly prone to this disorder.
These malformations appear to be genetically complex in inheritance, but A/WySn mice have an IAP retrotransposon integration in the region of Wnt9b that is suspected to be a major determinant of susceptibility. Cleft palates are often blamed for mortality among mutant mice derived from chemical mutagenesis, transgenesis, and targeted mutagenesis. Because these lesions are obvious, they tend to be
