Demodex cuniculi Infestation: Demodectic Mange

In keeping with Demodex biology in other species, infestations in the rabbit are probably common and sub- clinical, although this has not been documented. Sporadic cases of demodictic mange have been noted in domestic rabbits, which had areas of alopecia with mild seborrhea sicca. Microscopic findings included acanthosis and orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis with typical follicular plugging with keratin debris and mites.
