Ringtail
Annular constrictions of the skin of the tail lead to dry gangrene of the distal tail (Fig. 2.72). This syndrome is most apt to occur in preweaning rats. Ringtail has been attributed to low environmental humidity (e.g., less than 25%).
However, other factors, such as genetic susceptibility, low environmental temperatures, degree of hydration, and nutrition may be involved. In a study of specimens from a naturally occurring outbreak of ringtail in suckling rats, epidermal changes were observed to precede changes in the underlying tissues. Epidermal hyperplasia with orthokeratotic and paraker- atotic hyperkeratosis were prominent features. Dilated and thrombosed vessels were observed in severe cases, accompanied by necrosis hemorrhage and coagulative necrosis of the overlying epidermis. Topical application of lanolin was found to be beneficial in the treatment of this disease.
