Introduction

The aim of the present chapter is to identify the logical structure of the Sraffian theory of value. Perhaps the most interesting and relevant methodological considerations in economics are related to the production of empirical claims within a given disciplinary matrix - to use Kuhn’s term.

Each paradigm has its own “methodology of economics”, as each school has its own principles and methods, which cannot be described philosophically without probing deeply into the logical structure of its defining theory.

Following Sraffa’s Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities (pcc; Sraffa 1960), I intend to identify its basic theory-element through its fundamental law(s), and the general form of its empirical claim. The main problems that such a reconstruction must solve are those of figuring out the fundamental laws of the theory and the general form of its empirical claim and domain of intended applications.
